I'm actually using mod_gzip now... but it has a few problems:

  - it doesn't work that nicely with mod_ssl, you
    have to use mod_proxy and jump through hoops
 
  - it doesn't give application level control over
    who gets compressed content or not, i'd like 
    this to be an user-level choice; there are also
    other congfiguration issues that I'd like to 
    have more applicaiton control over.

  - it works only with apache... I'd like to switch
    over to medusa or some other python http server
    in a while.

  - it doesn't handle content that is already compressed.
