I have a piece that is due to be published on O'Reilly's Linux DevCenter site this week about "daemon monitoring daemons", which can be a good solution to this problem, as the people who mentioned daemontools later in this thread point out. I review the 4 or 5 most commonly used DMDs, including daemontools' supervise, and offer reasons for choosing to implement one or the other. I'm using monit as a DMD to monitor (and restart) Apache, Webware, named, sshd, and a few others. Setup is simple. If anyone wants to see the piece before it's public on O'Reilly's site, lemme know and I'll send along a draft (it's the first half of larger piece, the second half of which is doing wireless sysadmin with a Kyocera Palm phone).
