Way back in the day when I actually had to compile my web server code
(No not in the http/0.9 days when real men programmed in C and strange
men used perl, but in the more recent way back when I used compiled Java
to be executed by a compiler.....) I started playing with a framework
called struts.
There was a local talk by the author of a Struts book so I stopped by to
see what was going on.
Struts provides an MVC framework for creating a server app. I think
that I mentioned it on the list previously - so I won't go into details.
But my takehome message was this:
1) FunFormKit seems to have stolen a number of ideas from the next
realease of Struts
2) ALL of the developers that I spoke to were interested in Struts for
thier resume.
3) One developer used struts, but abandoned it for a simpler velocity
(another cheetah clone) based framework.
4) Adding security to an entire site requires adding code to EVERY
action in that site. I mentioned how we can just subclass in webware
and the response was "Its just three lines of code man" (Yes he
actually said man)
5) Stuts is an excellent framework for a visual desginer and an IDE,
no-one would/should code it all by hand.
The speaker was very good and its clear that java will continue to lead
the industry in good ideas.
All in all I continue to think webware is a good compromise between the
Java / .NET "abstract everything so we can ship the difficult parts to
talented programmers overseas and give the dumb americans a GUI"
and the PHP / PERL sentiment of "Its just text"
I talked to a couple of developers in the design stage. There was a
project manager that had tried Zope but his staff wanted to use Stuts so
they could say that they know struts. He also had Cheetah recommened to
him by his developers and is looking into Webware.
After the talk I had a little side discussion and all of the developers
complex problems that would be addressed by lots of little struts
classes and xml files become trivial w/ python. But webware does not
have any cool GUI's
