I thought I remembered an issue with RedHat 9 where you had to set the
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL environment variable to a specific value to avoid trouble
with the Native POSIX Thread Library (NPTL) implementation in RH9.  I
couldn't find any emails in the archives related to this, but I do remember
it.  Maybe someone else can supply the details.  Take a look at the release
notes for RH9 and search for LD_ASSUME_KERNEL:
