A couple of slight corrections to Alan's good note.

In the third paragraph I'm sure Alan meant to refer to TRN03 instead of
EB03 and the values of 1, 3 and 9.

Pages 190 and 268 of the 004010X092 Implementation Guide correctly
identify the maximum occurrences of TRN segments as 3. Alan's reference
to page 191 (and though he listed 268, he was probably looking at 269)
is to the maximum of 9 allowed in the X12 standard, however the
Implementation Guide restricts the maximum to 3. You had me worried
there for a second that we made a mistake in the guide Alan.

If no TRN came in on the 270 then don't send back a TRN (TRN01=2) back.
There is no concern populating the TRN03 because you don't send a TRN at
all.

The notes are pretty good at describing how to use the TRN. The
information source, intermediary, and source all get a chance to assign
one at 2000C (patient is subscriber) or 2000D (patient is dependent).
The value in the TRN01 changes depending on if you are sourcing or
echoing.

A EB03 of zero won't work because the notes specify that it must start
with a 1, 2, or 9. A nine zero may work to get through a compliance
checker but isn't very useful.

We noted that the repeat for the TRNs on 149 say "3" which matches the
rules in the notes. The repeat on pages 190 and 268 say "9". We are
considering the correct value to be "3" and 0-3 to be valid actual
counts.

Subject: 271 TRN segment

Is there a possibility that the sender of the 270 will not send a TRN
segment with a trace number populated, but the sender of the 271 would
complete the TRN going back? If so, how would you populate the required
TRN03 data element when nothing came in on the 270? Would zero be valid?
