I've found EDIFIX from those guys in Germany to be useful for
"pretty-printing" HIPAA EDI transaction data. I mostly use the product
for doing my high-tech XML e-business schema work, for which Gefeg is
renowned. But don't let the Berlin address throw you off - they have the
complete HIPAA guidelines built in to the product, and it handles X12
just fine.

I just open the EDI file as a "Test Data" file, apply the appropriate
HIPAA IG, and voil, I have a nice hierarchical view of the data laid
out by loops, segments and data elements, replete with descriptions.
Believe it or not, I can't read "raw" EDI all that well. For example, I
can never remember whether an NM1*41 is the Submitter or the Receiver
without looking at the book, so the test data report is extremely useful
for "reading" EDI data.

One of my few beefs with the report format is that it doesn't nest
implicit HL relationships, showing the subscriber within the Billing
Provider loop, for example. It also doesn't interpret diagnosis or
taxonomy codes with English language (nor German!) descriptions, forcing
me to look them up elsewhere.

EDIFIX is ideal for programmers and EDI folks. But something along the
lines of Martin Morrison's utilities will probably be better for the non
technical folks - or the small providers who want to do "print n' rip"
in "production."

Martin Morrison has one in the works. It is currently not ready for
prime time. This is the only 837 viewer that I am familiar with, at this
time.

Cindy,

Contact Martin Morrison. He has created a Microsoft word macro to
format and view an 835.

Does anyone know of a product that will create a human-readable, visual
representation of an 835 for providers?

Some in our provider community has indicated that they might be
interested in such a product.

Thank you,
