Personally I'm not seeing any real benefit but I certainly see a 'lot' of risk and pain. I'm still not getting the 'why' part. You want to tear apart everything because you need to set PYTHONPATH ? Why does anybody 'need' weewx installable via pip anyway ? Seems to me that setup.py is a bit of a solved problem at this point. Same with the extension installer. At this point there are dozens of extensions and drivers and skins installable in that format. Another solved problem as far as I can tell. FWIW, I would not be willing to repackage all my personal extensions + skins etc. into another format at this point. They work fine as-is. The extension installer scratches that itch for me.
