As you seem to only be reading through the GPIO, I would recommend a simple 
resistor voltage divider to cut the 5v to 3.3v max.

Of course this assumes that you are not going to get high voltage spikes on 
the GPIO pin from some other source - if that is a possibility then a 
resistor and zener diode might be the way to go.

For bidirectional signals, you can get level shifter ICs very cheaply.
