i forgot to mention the weewx quality control (QC).
in weewx.conf, do something like this in your QC section:
[StdQC]
[[MinMax]]
...
rain = 0, 1000, mm
this will not fix the root cause (spurious data from the acurite station),
but it will prevent obviously bad values from getting into the database.
