The problem was that I had not included

[[deltas]]
    rain = rain_total



In my defense, [[deltas]] wasn't mentioned in the README.  I found it in 
the sdr.py file itself.

Nine tips of the bucket just produced "rain" of 0.0699999999999994

It seems obvious in retrospect that this was needed.
