Assuming you are using hardware generation, this may stem from a misunderstanding of what you're seeing.
The Vantage logger emits ET only once an hour, on the hour. It is the total ET for the hour. So, most of the time $current.ET will display zero, but at the top of the hour, it will show the ET for the previous hour.
