I see a value around 4.6V, consistent with measuring the batteries (out
of the device) with a voltmeter.  So I can experimentally confirm what
you point out in the spec.

Olivier:

I would strongly recommend putting in 3 good alkaline batteries to the
console.  This will let it keep recording data over power glitches.  But
there is some risk of leakage - perhaps that's why you are avoiding it.

Without batteries, I wouldn't worry about the reported value.  It must
be an A/D converter that is mostly floating with various tiny leakage
currents providing bias.
