John, Just copy weewx.conf, contents of the /home/weewx/bin/user directory, contents of /home/weewx/skins directory (paths to these will depend on your weeWX install type - refer to http://weewx.com/docs/usersguide.htm#Where_to_find_things). Reinstall the same version of weeWX in the same manner (setup.py, dpkg etc) - you won't have to type much as all the settings will be picked up from existing weewx.conf. Then copy back weewx.conf, contents of /home/weewx/bin/user directory, contents of /home/weewx/skins directory. Restart WeeWX.
Doesn't avoid a reinstall but unless you get them all (the symlinks) you are likely to be chasing all sorts of errors who knows how far into the future.
