This wouldn't be a MariaDB install would it? My understanding is that when MariaDB replaced MySQL in Debian based distros it now uses Unix socket based authentication and no MariaDB root password is created/used on new installs. Whilst allegedly more secure I still go through and disable it and set a MariaDB root password (using mysql_secure_installation I think).
