assuming the smarthub hardware is ok, you can continue to use it even 
though the acurite support/servers are gone.  just point it at the computer 
running weewx and the weewx-interceptor driver:

as you noted, the software-defined radio (SDR) with weewx-sdr driver might 
be a better approach.  the SDR will detect signals not only from acurite, 
but also many other sensors.  so you can mix and match any number of 
sensors from any vendor, and combine them using the sensor_map into the 
database fields that you want.

a 20$US USB SDR dongle is cheaper than an acurite access, and much more 
versatile.
