The default units in the database are as listed here http://weewx.com/docs/customizing.htm#units
for a US database look down the US column rain = amount of rain which fell in the archive interval rainrate = amount of rain which fell in an hour (or would fall in an hour if it has not rained for a full hour) - if this is calculated by weewx a sliding window is used to generate a rainrate for an interval and then extrapolated to an hourly figure.
