I've finally come around to return None so that the user can take trap the situation and take remedial actions if necessary but the template will at least complete without giving an error.
Either that or for weewx to define what is meant by week, month and year in terms of days and to use those definitions. One could expand the definitions by also having calendarmonth and calendaryear if one wished to really complicate things. I think I've now had more than my pennyworth of opinions on this topic!!
