Hi, Am sure Tom will come along with some succinct wise words but in the interim I would say it depends. There was a fundamental change in database structure (and hence some key portions of the source code) between version 2 and version 3. You will likely find the upgrade process is automatically invoked when you install a version 3 version, and that upgrade process will take care of the database changes. Where the depends part comes in is if you happen to be running any customisations, chances are they will need to be upgraded as well. If it’s a plain vanilla install you will likely be fine.
All that being said it is probably worthwhile skimming through the Upgrade Guide (http://weewx.com/docs/upgrading.htm#From_V2.7_or_earlier) which contains instructions to upgrade from various versions. Whatever you do make a back up first, a cautious user might attempt an upgrade on a separate machine in the first instance.
