I recall a few others using an original Vantage Pro (the API is essentially identical), so WeeWX should work just fine.
Have you been able to establish connectivity and run the "TEST" test <http://weewx.com/docs/usersguide.htm#Establishing_connectivity>? It is independent of WeeWX, so it's a pure connectivity test.
