I run one and just received a notice about a firmware update for the WLIP from Davis - why do you think they are obsolete? BTW, the update isn't needed to keep WeeWX happy.
WeeWX 3.9.2 runs off a Linux box and finds and interacts with the link just fine. Also, define flaky, I was having restart problems until I assigned the device a static IP from the DNS pool on my router, other than that, it seems to work fine.
