Everybody's experience is a bit different. I guess one of the things to
consider is reliability. Which of the two options in your particular
situation is more reliable. For instance, if you have to reboot the gateway
every two weeks because it just stops..then that's a factor to think about.
Ecowitt.net can send you an email alert that you are offline. If you are at
home, no big deal to do a hard reset. If you are away from home, you'll
need a smart switch to power cycle the gateway. If WeeWX never requires a
reboot because it never gets "stuck" or runs out of memory, then you have
your answer.

One thing about WeeWX is that it calculates the proper atmospheric
pressures (Altimeter setting and SLP) using algorithms. The Ecowitt gateway
or their display consoles do not have this ability. Even if you set up the
barometer properly, it's REL value (relative pressure) is at best, only an
approximation of Altimeter. The Ecowitt firmware has no abilities to do any
temperature compensations for air pressure. In other words, Ecowitt can not
do SLP calculations. If you are uploading, you might as well upload the
most accurate data that is available.
Note: I am making the assumption that you do not live at or close to sea
level.
