The dates are used to zoom in/out of a chart - see the *zoom* parameter
in the Wiki:
https://github.com/uajqq/weewx-belchertown-new/wiki/Charts#zoom-and-zoom_range
You may find the ability to zoom most useful when the charts span a
longer time period - see your Charts web page.
You have the ability for fine-grained zoom control: enable/disable the
ability on a per chart basis.
