I just got Dave Barry's Money Secrets and there is a whole section
about Gene! It's about negotiating at a car dealership. It goes on
for several pages about the differences between Dave's and Gene's
negotiating techniques at a car dealership, and basically Dave uses
Gene as someone who is the polar opposite of him at a car dealership.
Dave doesn't know how to negotiate. Gene ALWAYS negotiates, although
obviously he hasn't done much car negotiating lately. There was a
whole section about this in I'm With Stupid also.
An excerpt from Dave's book:
If your'e like me, you should never go into a car dealership, or even
walk past a car delership, alone. You should always take along a
designated negotiator. I recomment my friend Gene Weingarten. He
actually likes to bargain with car salespersons. It's a blood sport
for h im. He ca sit in the cubicle for days and not change his
position by a dime. he would rather undergo a vasectomy with a
WeedEater than purchase undercoating.
Then Dave talks about how Gene would have gotten an even better deal
on the Louisiana Purchase, etc. etc. It's pretty funy. Get this book
from the library if it is available, or wait for paperback. It isn't
worth $25 for a 230-page book. Dave even says this book is a bad
investment. Costs way more than you can expect to make.
