I went past Humpy's without going in (it was too dark -- I needed
sunlight) and didn't make it to the other place in Anchorage that
somebody recommended, so at least one WCer will consider my trip to
have been wasted. But I got to fly up to Nome for the weekend
(although I missed the *entire* Iditarod -- the last musher arrived
on Tuesday, and I didn't get to Nome till Friday evening, dagnabbit -
- my timing stank).
Despite missing the Iditarod, though, not only did I have a dogsled
ride in/around Nome (am waiting for the photos -- you'll be able to
tell it's me because my purple-gloved hand is sticking out of the
interior of the sled in an attempted wave), but I was also loaded
onto the back of a snowmachine and driven 20 miles into the frozen
wastelands on a *camping trip.* Yep, I went camping in Alaska when
the daytime temp was between zero and 10 degrees. Okay, we stayed
in a cabin, but we didn't have any heat during the night, and let me
tell you, it was COLD.
It was also gorgeous -- at least from what I could see from behind
the enormous hood worn by my old law school pal. (She was driving
the snowmachine.) We went with her husband and a bunch of other
friends of theirs, plus a dog -- a non-sled dog -- who ran alongside
the snowmachines for the entire 20 miles.
Turns out that my camera batteries didn't work very well in the
extreme cold, but I will post whatever pictures turned out -- I
haven't downloaded 'em yet, because my muscles are still aching from
the snowmachine ride up and back, the multiple attempts to dig the
snowmachines out when they got stuck, and the approximately 24 hours
(including layovers) it took to get back home.
In other words, I had a BLAST.
