Please join me at an unofficial mixer next thursday, April 6. Saki,
in Adams Morgan, is hosting a fundraiser for Young Playwright's
Theater (YPT), an amazing organization that works with kids in DC.
There is no charge to get in -- all tips and 20% of food sales will go
to YPT. So, basically, you just have to eat and drink (and tip well)
and YPT will benefit.

My friend Karen Wayland will be guest bartending. In addition to her
impeccable qualifications described below, Karen has the distinction
of actually having hosted a washingtonpost.com chat. Of course, since
it was on energy policy, about five people tuned in. Nonetheless,
she'd be happy to fill you in on the chat experience from the other
side.

All details are below, but let me know if you have any questions. I'd
be happy to provide a "poop." sign if some of you commit to coming.

Also, can someone bring some peeps?

Julie

This Thursday we will be raising money for the Young Playwrights' Theater.

My Guest bartender will be Karen Wayland.

>From Karen:
After sixteen years of schlepping drinks and waitressing, I finally went to
grad school and got a real job. I did environmental consulting, worked on
the Hill and now lobby Congress on environmental issues for the Natural
Resources Defense Council. And frequently when I get home after a long day
of watching this Congress at work, I think, "Boy, do I miss being behind the
bar!" This is my chance to relive some great moments of my younger
years--mixing shots and pouring beers, all while pocketing bountiful tips
from increasingly inebriated regulars. Except this time around, I won't be
pocketing my tips, I'll be donating them to charity. Since it's been a while
since I've mixed drinks, please remember that you're not tipping the
bartender-less-than-extraordinaire, you're donating to the Young
Playwright's Theater.

Look for me and my NRDC colleagues in the GREEN issue of vanity fair coming out
in April.

Hope to see you on April 6th!

What is Young Playwrights' Theater?
http://www.yptdc.org

Young Playwrights' Theater empowers students and teaches in DC public
schools to creatively express themselves and engage the world around them
through the art of playwriting. Through a series of in-school and
after-school programs, YPT advances student literacy, creative expression,
communication, and conflict resolution while developing a new generation of
playwrights whose views are traditionally underrepresented in the theater
and the community. Your donation will help provide tickets and
transportation for our young emerging playwrights to see professional
theater productions, offset expenses for play productions, provide stipends
for theater professionals - directors, dramaturges, actors, and
playwrights - who teach our students and take their words from the page to
the stage.

$25 pays for two students to see a professional theatre performance.
$50 sponsors a guest actor to work in the classroom for a day.
$100 pays royalties to one student whose play is produced in the Youth or
Dare Tour.
$250 pays for one week of a professional playwright's in-school residency.
$500 helps underwrite one Youth or Dare Tour performance in the community.
