I was thinking that I didn't have a bank account anyway back then in which to deposit the checks, but just remembered that when I was in 3rd grade, a local bank (PSFS for anyone who's from Philly) started a program in which they came to the school and opened a passbook savings account for everyone.  Once a week they would come and take a deposit from us, usually 50 cents or so and would update the passbook.  I wonder what their reaction would have been if I had started showing up with hundreds of dollars of checks to deposit...
