I think they [the democrats] are making a mistake because I think they
fundamentally misunderstand the fact that in America people recognize
that the primary purpose of marriage is the creation and the
development of the next generation. And the ideal way to create and
develop the next generation is to have homes with moms and dads. And
that's something where traditional marriage is going to play such a
key role.
One's opinion of Chris Matthews doesn't affect what Mitt said.
The first thing I think of when I read something like this is John
Kerry and Theresa Heinz. For some reason I don't think that the
primary purpose of their marriage is the creation and development of
the next generation. Not sure how he feels about people over 50
marrying, but since presumably having kids isn't high priority, what
difference does it make what sex the spouse is? Or if people don't
want kids in general? Is that as bad as being gay in his opinion? I
think if same sex parents want kids (or already have kids) that's
great, but even if you are of Mitt's opinion that 2 opposite-sex
parents is the ideal, that doesn't explain the justification for
childless couples needing to be opposite sex. And are single-parent
families immoral too? I realize I'm preaching to the choir here, but
still, I think Romney is just making up some lame excuse for being
against gay marriage.
