Actually, that's what my dad does. He designs them. And yes, all the water from your house goes to the same place. Hopefully to a treatment plant, which will release it into a stream, which actually continues the filtering process. Streams, in fact, are better at filtering water than any sewage treatment plant, but they can't handle the sheer amount of human waste we produce.
And, in case you had ever thought about touching the rivers near DC, I can end that right now. When it rains here all of the overflow, including waste water from your house, goes straight into the Anacostia without any filtration whatsoever. One of the most ecologically friendly things you can do here is to not flush your toilet during a storm.
