I think the other important factor in the dirk gently story is that the computer determined it was impossible for the couch to have gotten into that position in the first place.  Great book!

Also, going back to that couch story, and the comment
about Dirk Gently? What was forgotten was that the guy
had written a computer program to figure out the
angle, and there was a cycling image on his computer
of the couch moving 360 degrees in an attempt to find
the correct angle. Also? There's a guy somewhere in DC
who dismantles couches, moves them into houses, and
puts them back together without damaging them.
