becoming apparent that it's totally ridiculous how many of these
things I've been to, much less "in", the more I think about it. My
earlier estimates were exceedingly low. Hell, my three siblings
account for four weddings between them! Add cousins...make it another
six or so. And I didn't even think about the ones I was taken to by a
boyfriend or something. Yikes.
So here's a good near-disaster wedding story. Friend from ... boarding
school (I'm almost 100% sure...it's getting harder and harder to keep
track of where I knew who from when)...asks me to be in her small,
very informal wedding on the coast just outside of Providence, R.I.
This is 1991. The reason I know the year will become apparent
momentarily. So I organize a trip where I will go to Providence, be in
her wedding, and head on over to martha's vineyard to visit my Mom.
Bride is, now that I think about it, the first I ever encountered who
didn't require a certain dress, and said "so long as it is some shade
of pink, whatever you want" and there were only three attendants
anyway. How happy was I, as I had a dusty pink linen day dress that
fit the bill. It was also the first non-"production" wedding I ever
attended.
Anyway, bride is Jewish, but not devout, and groom was religion
unknown, so the ceremony was a rather ecclectic mix of traditions, and
kind of sweet as a result. We did have a Huppa (sorry if I spelled
that wrong, I'm totally ignorant of these things), and I was
designated as a huppa-holder. (okay, I'm trying not to giggle right now).
So, you ask, what makes this wedding memorable at all? Well, by
utilizing google just now, I can say that the blessed event was at
about 11 am on August 18th, 1991. I am standing outside, holding my
corner of the huppa, and the waves are kicking up and the wind is
rising pretty dramatically. As I am a mere slip of a thing at 5'2", I
was starting to worry that I would take flight any time with such a
lovely sail as the huppa was providing. Fortunately the best man was a
pretty good anchor at about 200 lbs.
The ceremony mercifully complete, a very pleasant if somewhat hurried
lunch was had by all, and I basically bolted to try to make it to
Woods Hole (Cape Cod) and catch a ferry, as Hurricane Bob was bearing
down on us pretty rapidly. Long story short (cadging rides and
combining bus schedules) I did, barely, make the LAST ferry leaving
the mainland (the last before the tidal surge made it impossible for
them to dock) and got under my Mother's roof before the thing hit on
the 19th. Bride and groom apparently got out of Dodge for their
honeymoon evening of the 18th.
So I have been smack in the middle of a hurricane and two major
earthquakes. So long as tornadoes leave me alone, I'll be content.
But they will never forget their wedding date.
