Participles are adjectival forms of verbs.  They can still take objects just like regular transitive verbs.
 
As for the comedic evaluation, one of the most depressing comedians out there is Eddie Izzard, whose show is full of joy and funny accents (Darth Vader in French, e.g.) and transvestitism (sp?) and human rights abuses of the last century. Absolutely hilarious, makes you cry.  But he's not depressed.
