Spends his time with Pig because it makes him feel superior and, more importantly, no one else will hang out with him.
While these characteristics can make one unpleasant to hang out with, it doesn't mean he is mean, nasty, and/or violent. I would take Rat over Bucky any day. Anyway, the website also specifically says "At its heart, Pearls Before Swine is the comic strip tale of two friends: a megalomaniacal Rat who thinks he knows it all and a slow-witted Pig who doesn't know any better."
