With gmail, you don't get 8,000 meesages- at least it doesn't look like 8,000 messages. They put all of a thread, all the replies, in one message. I filter all of the "[wc]" into it's own folder. Even at our most prolific, most days I'll only have like 4 new messages. Now, one of those messages might be many,many back-and-forths, but gmail hides the quoted text, and all I have to do is page-down and read. I actually really like it for a group like this.

Gmail can handle it. Between this group and Freecycle I can get
upwards of 200 emails a day. I AM AN ADDICT.
