Robin,
Wow...I've never thought that calling someone the "baby" could bring up so much. I will refrain from that "label" in the future in case the person is carrying a broadsword or something.
It's funny because all the the second kids that my friends have tend to be totally ignored compare to the older child.. maybe the 3rd or forth child would be treated better once the guilt sets in.

There are plenty of labels I don't mind as well, but something about granola (hippy as well) seems so belittling.  It reminds me of those conversations I keep having that go like this:

New acquaintance: So, how many siblings do you have?

Me:  3.

NA:  Are they older or younger?

Me:  They're all older.

NA:  So you're the BABY!

Me:  Look, just because you're parents ignored you and spoiled your little sib, doesn't mean that mine did.  I've financially and emotionally supported my big brother for the last 2 years, besides having changed hundreds of diapers, despite not having any children of my own yet.  Bite me, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Actually, that's just what I want to say.  What really happens is I give a pained smile and change the subject.  Just don't call me a "little lady."  Then the gloves come off.

Oh dear, I'm ranting, aren't I?
