Actually stingrays usually AREN'T that deadly--the sting can be excruciatingly painful but is rarely fatal. The ray pierced his heart, which is rare. So it really was bad luck, according to the Post article. Also ironically Irwin was filming a series called "Ocean's Deadliest". No kidding, right?
