There are hardly ANY original movies anymore--the VAST majority are
based on books, comic books, TV shows, previous movies, plays, etc.
Some movies based on books are based on books that I know little to
nothing about or came out so recently that the movie deal was made
before the book was even published. I don't read too many books (too
busy reading magazines--obviously a recurring theme in my life) but
for the ones I do that are or were made into movies, I have no
problem watching the movie and reading the book, in either order.
Watch the movie first, then read the book and see how closely the
screenplay keeps to the book, or read the book first and see how much
liberty is taken with the movie. I can see how reading the book
first might be preferable because then your imagination isn't limited
by the actors chosen for the roles, but I think if you see the movie
first you could be more critical of the movie by seeing the liberties
the scriptwriter took.
