Yes!  The dirt gets caught in the bristles!  That's what I was trying 
to say, not very successfully.  The cause of my broom rage is that the 
dirt gets caught in the bristles, making it subsequently significantly 
less effective and almost counterproductive.  I just couldn't figure 
out how to say it as succinctly as you did.
