I'm not terribly surprised that Gene is totally logic-bound on the
whole idea of ghostly goodbyes and so forth. I'm not totally convinced
they aren't real in some way--there are so many stories of those
goodbye dreams.
Slightly different but in the same ball park:
Many years ago I was driving on a five lane highway in the fast lane
doing about 75 in moderate traffic. A car (going much slower than I
was) in the next lane moved in front of me to pass another car and did
not return to their lane (in fact slowed more) and I was forced to not
only hit the brakes but swerve into the center divider area. I hit
sand and the next thing I knew I was in a spin out in the middle of
the freeway. I have never experienced absolute sheer terror as I did
at that moment--I was completely certain that someone was going to hit
me going 70 mph and I was dead. Miraculously no one did and I managed
to stop the spin and get myself to the side of the freeway. I looked
at my dashboard clock and calculated how many hours I had ahead of me
and whether I'd do best to pull off and get a hotel for the night.
Twenty minutes of calming my nerves later, I got back out there and
drove the rest of my trip.
Later that night I phoned my best friend and said "You won't BELIEVE
what happened to me" and she interrupted and said, "Wait. Did it
happen at 7:10?" And I said, "What?" She said, "I was in a 7 o'clock
screening, totally engrossed in the movie, and my concentration was
suddenly interrupted by this powerful thought of you. So much so I
looked at my watch."
My dashboard clock said 7:11 when I looked at it. My theory is that I
sent out some kind of a psychic scream to my loved ones. I'd be
willing to bet my mother thought of me right at that moment, but it
wouldn't be a big deal because she thinks of me often anyway. I wish
I'd asked some of them the next day to see if anyone remembered anything.
About once a year I drive over that same stretch of road and never
fail to count my blessings.
