There was a year there, in the late 90s where Esquire and GQ tried to play the same game as Maxim, FHM, etc., largely putting more stories in there about "how to please a woman" and the other pseduo-adolescent nonsense, all while ignoring the great writing and reporting done by a great magazine. Since their "What they saw" issue in October 2001 (all about 9/11), I think they've reclaimed the spot of best magazine around.
For example, Esquire does an issue every year called "The State of the American Man." And this year, instead of writing about trucks or football or how to please a woman (or the G-spot, as GQ did this month), one of their centerpiece stories was this:

That, my friends, is great magazine writing.
In this month's issue, in addition to the Chuck Klosterman column and
an in depth interview with Scarlett Johansson, the sexiest woman alive,
Esquire endorses a candidate in every senate, congressional, and
governor race in the country. It a completely gender-neutral, non-
partisan, well-researched, comprehensive guide to every race and every
candidate, state by state, district by district. I can't believe the
amount of work that went into this. If I were on the fence about any
race on my ballot I would definitely go by whoever Esquire endorses.
They make a lot more sense than any newspaper endorsement I've read.
Unfortunately all my reps are running uncontested except governor, in
which Esquire matches who I was voting for anyway, but if anyone isn't
sure who to vote for I highly recommend reading this month's Esquire.
And no I don't work for them or know anyone who works for them, but
they really did a good job with this. My 2c.
