I made a fascinating discovery over Thanksgiving--The Really Rosie
songs sung by Carole King are actually Maurice Sendak books, which
were made into the TV special and sung by King. The animation is by
Sendak based on the books. I don't know if EVERY song was a book, but
Pierre, Alligators All Around, Chicken Soup, and One Was Johnny were
books. I think they were published around 1962. Until Thanksgiving I
thought Carole King made up all the songs herself. No idea they had
been around for about 12 years before the TV special. My nephew was
watching a DVD of Maurice Sendak Stories, and they used the animation
and Carole King songs from Really Rosie. The DVD also has Where the
Wild Things Are and In the Night Kitchen, spoken and animated. I
totally didn't make the Maurice Sendak connection for like 30 years.
Did anyone know this before? I realize it is entirely possible that
you don't care one way or the other, I was just wondering. I love
Really Rosie--that's what turned me on to Carole King, the first
popular musician I was a fan of.
