I always wondered why "ally" was pronounced "allai".  When I saw it 
written I initially didn't realize it was the same word as what I had 
heard spoken.  Or maybe it was the reverse--I saw "ally" and thought 
France and England were something pronounced "alleys" but 
spelled "allies".  Then when I head it spoken I thought it was a 
different word.
