Lauderdale certainly has a large and quite out gay population. (A gay
friend of mine has charged me with taking his ashes, mixed with his lover's,
to Lauderdale to scatter near Los Olas (I think it's Los Olas - I'd better
confirm) where they had memorable Florida vacations... tho it looks like he
has a good chance of outliving me and had better get someone else lined up
in case...[I'm getting on, but he is HIV, so it's a race to the grave...BUT
I'm in perfect health, and he runs marathons despite 15+ years since his
diagnosis...so no real odds either way.) But no matter how many gay, there
are faaaaar more straight, and many of them very straight old retirees with
rather fossilized outlook...

I'd be a little leery of public toilets that popped open after a certain
shortish period of time. There are occasions when one gets legitimately
stuck to the seat for an undue length...

Hey, sounds like a possible topic for Gene's chat! Alas I am away today and
can't participate. Tho could submit ahead of time... Nah, in a rush to get
out the door and it sounds like a natural for someone among his regular
readers to lob to him...

Too bad the mayor doesn't have a good aptonym...

Ellen said - I kind of wonder how he got elected in Ft. Lauderdale. Doesn't
seem
to be a big hit with his constituents. I live in the gay area of
Chicago. I feel like a minority as a heterosexual person. If someone
like him moved to my neighborhood without knowing the demographics
they would be surprised. I don't see that many actual gay couples,
but every business establishment seems to assume that everyone is
gay. The bookstores, libraries, live theatres, clothing stores,
restaurants, you name it. Every free newspaper is the alternative
something or other. I've never been anywhere where homosexuality was
such a front-and-center topic. I believe Dupont Circle is the gay
area of DC, but it's NOTHING compared to boystown in Chicago. Gays
are much more under the radar in Dupont Circle, except for maybe a
bookstore here and there.
