He has admitted this himself, but I think he does those customer service crank calls when he has writer's block and can't think of anything else to write about. It's a crutch. I think Dave Barry is a funnier essay writer but Gene is a funnier person. As others have mentioned, I like the chats better than the columns. Gene seems to be better with improvising spontaneous answers to questions than having to write a whole essay on something specific. At least that's my impression.
