by David SafierDemocratic legislators are traveling around the state talking
about the budget with constituents. They'll be in Tucson Thursday, February 5,
from 7-9 pm, at Amphi High School, Murphy Auditorium (125 W. Yavapai, just
South of Prince off of Stone).

by David SafierI've received lots of comments on yesterday's post about Vic
Williams' statement, "In many ways we are handling some of our education
problems through the budget." I asked for something from Vic on the campaign
trail that talked about schools and money, and Patt supplied this:
I live in LD 26 too, and I save campaign advertising. I have a Vic Williams
piece that says:
" Vic Williams will:
...Make a quality public education system a top priority by working to ensure
that it is well funded, equipped, and ready to serve the needs of our
children."I guess "well funded" can mean different things to different people.
Patt continues with another statement I haven't tracked down, so I don't know
the context:
But according to a piece sent out by the AZ Democratic Party, Vic said he
wanted to take $400 million from schools. The statement is footnoted as a
reference from KUAT, LD 26 House GOP Debate, 8/6/08.If anyone has the time and
energy to track down the original quotation, let us know.

America's toughest sheriff got some extra budget money

by David SafierAll state agencies are feeling some pain with the new Arizona
budget. But hell, they all have too much money anyway, according to the
Republican budget cutters. It's belt tightening time. No exceptions.
Except Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who Lou Dobbs refers to
affectionately as America's Toughest Sheriff.Russell Pearce made sure he got an
extra $1.6 million.
It's the Guardian Angel's story at the Arizona Guardian, so I'll let the Angel
fill in the details.
Nice work if you can get it: The Angel was interested to see that Maricopa
County Sheriff Joe Arpaio made out like a bandit in the 2009 budget skirmish.
While the Legislature's budget knife was slicing millions from nearly
everyone's bank accounts -- kids, families, poor people, college students, for
instance -- chief Senate budget honcho Russell Pearce made sure Joe actually
got $1.6 million in new money for his version of illegal immigration
enforcement. Pearce and Arpaio like to bellyache that the money replaces cash
taken away by then Guv Janet Napolitano. But the Winged One is here to set that
record straight. As the East Valley Tribune reported in it's "Reasonable
Doubt" series that analyzed America's self-described Toughest Sheriff's
anti-human smuggling activities, Janet only snagged $600,000 back from Joe.
Another $600,000 was lost simply because Arpaio's office didn't get the grant
paperwork in on time. The Haloed One adds that up to about $1.2 million. Pearce
seems to have thrown in another $400,000 just for good measure. One of those
who's noticed the favorable treatment is freshman Democrat Rep. Rae Waters, a
Kyrene School Board member, who fought -- and lost -- a battle to keep schools
from taking it in the fiscal shorts. Waters wants to know why the state is
enhancing the county's budget so substantially and especially only one county.
The cash goes exclusively to Arpaio's operation.I guess you're not expected to
do more with less if you're going after Public Enemy Number One, illegal
immigrants. What could possibly be more important than that?
