 Dear MoveOn member,

There's a new, huge risk to health care reform--and we need to speak out
against it right away.

Opponents of President Obama's public health insurance option are
proposing something they call a "trigger." It's designed to kill the
momentum behind a public health insurance option that would guarantee
coverage for everyone. The "trigger" means insurance companies get years
longer to fix the system before we could even consider a public option.

As our friends at Health Care for America Now have said, "Think about it.
What would the trigger be for the public health insurance option?
Skyrocketing prices? Already there. No choice or competition? Already
there. Denying care? Already there. As has been proven time and time
again, we have a health care crisis now. Trigger conditions have long
since been met."1

We can't afford to wait for bold health care reform. Can you call Sen. Hagan?
Tell her: "Please fight for an immediate public health insurance
option. The 'trigger' plan is unacceptable."

Here's where to call:

  Senator Kay Hagan
  Phone: 202-224-6342
  District Offices:
      Greensboro: 336-333-5311
      Raleigh: 919-856-4630

We're at a crucial moment on health care. Key Senate committees are
drawing up their proposals right now. If the committee includes a strong
public health insurance option, it's a huge step for progressives. But if
right-wingers get their way and Obama's plan is gutted, it won't be real
reform at all.

Here's why a public health insurance option is so important:

  * A choice for all of us. Keep your current insurance, if you like it.
Or choose a new, high-quality public health insurance plan.
  * Savings in a tough economy. The public health insurance plan would not
have to pay for things like CEO bonuses or shareholder profits, so it
would cost less. For-profit insurers would have to provide better
quality at lower prices to compete, so even those who keep their
    current insurance would save.
  * Guaranteed, universal health care. The public health insurance option
will always be there for Americans who lose their insurance, or just
don't have any. And President Obama has proposed offering subsidies to
individuals and families who can't afford it, so everyone will be
    covered.

The public health insurance option is the key to real health care reform,
and progressives need to protect it. Please call today.

Thanks for all you do.
