I've copied Angel into this because I know she's keen to build a hoop too. You need:
At least 3.1415etcetc metres of 3/4inch, 160psi alkathene to make a 1m diameter hoop. I think mine are actually a bit bigger, ie 38ish inches. The alkathene can be bought at the farm shop in Porirua, open till lunchtime Saturdays, and comes in rolls of 50m for $90ish. I'm keen to go in on some with others - one roll makes ~16 hoops. Joiner - 19mm available at Mitre 10, the kind that is double-ended and sits flush with the tubing is good (obvious which when you see them). Wire - can be bought at Mitre 10 or $2 shop, I like 14 gauge for the spines and the fine fusewire type stuff for the tying. Kevlar 5cm is good, and I calculate it on 30cm per spine (you can do four, six or eight spines on a hoop), which will give you some left over. Tape! Cos tape makes everything better! ;-) On 14 April 2010 15:44, Alphamatrix <[email protected]> wrote: > Right - time to revive this, I think! > > Is anyone keen on a making day either this weekend or next? > > I'd like to make some practice hoops and a fire hoop, but haven't > actually made either before. > Does anyone have some spare tubing they want to share (for $), or > should I also arrange a buying mission? > > And Wendy - what kind of things would I need for the hoop? Please bring Koha if you wish to use the fuel provided. This is pegasol and is highly refined kerosene $5 minimum. If you wish to bring your own fuel, please bring your own dipping bucket so you do not mix down the peg with regular kero.
