In this case, I have a suggestion: you could try to keep upstream
sources separated from patches. That is _exacly_ what the various
package managers (deb, rpm, etc) are all about.

For example, you take portaudio-x.y.z.tar.gz and, instead of
maintaining ALL their sources in your svn, you can just version the
diff between version x.y.z and your own.

This way you mark a clear line between pristine sources and your
patches easing the packagers work.
