Hello Michal,

Thank you a lot for insisting on the Linux support. If it does not work as you
say we have to crack it down.

Tests have been made on several Linux boxes and it worked so now it narrows
down to specific installs, specific audio hardware, installed drivers, sound
system support,...

What I propose to you all is that I am going to try and help us crack these
problems down by a systematic approach.

A [linux] thread is going to begin on the mailing list that will be dedicated
to linux specific problems and in order to crack them down.

Talk to you in this thread ;-)

Jérôme

Objet : [Wengophone-devel] WengoPhone and Sound in Linux (again)

Hi again

I tried using build 8136 and build 8140 (I don't have the time to set-up a
build enviroment for WengoPhone myself, so I use the builds available from
openwengo's website) on a Linux 2.6.15-27-k7 (Kubuntu Dapper Drake, if that
rings a bell). Sound support is still very poor - it is actually impossible
to use Wengo to call anybody if any other sound-enabled application is
running (crashes upon talking)!

Now, I know it's still beta and so on and so forth, but hello, Skype has
released the new 1.3beta version with ALSA as the sound back-end, and I've
heard it works like a charm; Gizmo project seems to have a fairly good sound
support in Linux; and WengoPhone used to!..

And I actually *do* mean it, I remember Wengo (yes again, I am refering to
Wengo NG a.k.a. Wengo 2.0) running like hell on my box - the same
configuration - along with some other sound-enabled apps (amarok,
beep-media-player, etc.). The Big Question is: how on earth did it get
b0rked? And when?! (no, I don't remember wich of the revs where working ok)

I *don't want* to (and *will not*) use Skype as my VoIP Softphone (ideological
reasons: OpenSource fanatic here), but that's not the point, now is it? I
mean, I would just *love* to show Wengo to my friends and family, and spread
the word, and tell everyone I know why Wengo is better than Skype, and,
and... but I can't. Simply because - man, I hate to say it! - it is *not*
better than Skype at the moment. The sound just doesn't work.

And yes, I know I have already raised this issue, but hey, something like 250+
revs ago... By my book, that would mean it *needs* to be raised again.

Nevertheless cheers
Mike
