Follow-up Comment #5, bug #6191 (project wesnoth):

It's not exactly the same, I think; this suggestion would mean two units
actually fighting each other, just with the values of the random numbers
predetermined, while the other one would mean calling a single attack
animation, not a whole attack sequence. 

This (6191) could be done through a series of those attack animations from
9019 plus floating numbers plus reducing unit HP, but it would take pages and
pages of WML just to do one attack like that.

Unless I misunderstood somebody, in which case ignore this.
