Yes, i don't know the old system, but the current overlapping propagate the
refresh of hexes when there is units with parts out of the hex. So the
3-units example will causes a refresh of all their hexes (+ some adjacent)

So, i think it's fixed.

Btw, in 1.3.4, i added a debug command "sunset" to show how hex are 
refreshed. It can help to verify things like that. Type "sunset" with debug
on. It's a toggle but you can use "sunset n" with n the speed parameter
(darkening every n frames)
